Personal Interview Opinion:
The interviewing process is generally a good way to hire the right candidate for a particular job. After the company has seen the résumé of the individual and there seems to be a good fit the hiring manager has the opportunity to better understand who the person is by conducting an interview. As the résumé is the skills and achievements of the individual, the interview shows how the person thinks and it also shows if there is a good fit with the personality.
Goals of the Interview:
For the most part the interview is able to provide enough information to make an accurate decision on the potential hire. If the person conducting the interview is well prepared and asks the proper questions at the appropriate times the results can turn out well. If the person being interviewed is prepared the interview can go well. If both people are properly prepared the time spent will be productive and can give both parties an accurate idea of what the company is and who the people are.
Improvements on the interview process:
I would have the potential hire shadow a current employee for a day or two rather than having a probationary period of employment that lasts on average of 90 days. This would be a ‘secondary interview’. There would be the more traditional interview style of questions being asked and dialogue exchanged but this would be the hands-on portion of the interview. The goal of this would be to see how the potential hire handles the environment as well as give a chance for interaction with the current employees.
There were two formats of résumés that were discussed. The two different types are a chronological and functional résumé. The chronological résumé is the most common with the functional résumé being used for someone wanting to make a career shift. The main purpose of a résumé is to match the skills of the individual to the job opening. The preparation is key because it is the first impression from the first contact by the individual to the company.
Guidelines to the cover letter:
This is the chance for the applicant to send information directly to the hiring manager and highlight the skills of the individual. This is also a great time to put the keywords of the job description in this first page that will be seen by the company. The text gives a pretty good example of what a cover letter could look like for someone wanting to highlight their education.
For the person being interviewed the company will need to be researched. The individual needs to be punctual and use proper demeanor throughout the interview. Honesty is always key when showing what skills and experiences tie into the job.
The person doing the interview will need to prepare questions in advance. Illegal questions will be avoided like marital status, race, or anything else that does not involve the job and the success thereof.
I will use the combination résumé in the future. I like how it takes the best of the chronological and functional résumés and puts them together well. When this résumé is used well it can provide a strong view into who the person is.
Problem: A co-worker of mine was disagreeing in how to move camera gear.
Action: I took him away from the situation and I spoke to him individually on how things need to be moved.
Result: We have not had any other troubles of how to transport camera gear.
